Tombstone Solo Mission – Out & About

Buzzzzzz, 2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10+; Yeah that’s right, it took ten plus phone calls to finally place an order at The Pleasant Café on Friday February 28, 2014. Maybe I’m mistaken but I didn’t even think it was possible to get a busy signal on the phone now-a-days. Judging by the traffic it may as well have been the end of days for all could tell and to my dismay, the mayhem did not stop there.  So, by the time I finally got to my pizza destination all three of their designated parking lots were stuffed to the gills with badly parked cars, which ultimately forced me to park three blocks away in single digit, frigid temperatures. As I approached the brightly lit neon pizza sign that has supposedly shown down on Washington Street in Roslindale MA for over 80 years welcomed me, and gave me a sense of calm amongst all the chaos that seemed to be intently inspired on ruffling my panties. The rotary end of Centre Street in West Roxbury has been dubbed “Restaurant Row” by locals as it is the hub of all things dining, notably acknowledged for; West on Centre, Phuket, The Real Deal, Sugar and The Porter Café, among many others. The Parlour, a recent addition, is a pizza joint that also offers meatballs, ice cream and an excellent beer selection, on tap and in cans. The Parlour defiantly has an uphill battle to claim patrons in a pizza saturated market. In a 1.4 mile stretch of Spring/Centre St (Baker St. to the WR Parkway Rotary) there are 8 dedicated pizza joints.

There was once a great pizza battle on the streets of Cleveland Circle. I speak of none other than Pino’s vs. Presto’s. Pino’s claimed victory in the early summer of 2012 when Presto’s closed it doors. Pino’s is your typical looking take out pizza joint, a few booths and tables with the pick up/order counter in the rear. Pino’s serves and is known for the New York Neapolitan style pizza but also offer Sicilian style.  Ordering was simple and we only waited around 8 minutes for our pizza to be ready. The holy trinity of shakers (Parmesan/Romano, oregano, crushed red pepper) were available. Continue reading →
