Aside from a from haunted picture frame (one hoisted itself from off of the windowsill and onto Tombstones lap without any outside interference, Zoinks!), Max and Leo’s was Excellent with a capital E. Loyal SG fanatics know that we have hit up a few AVPN certified Neapolitan style pizza establishment. We have been less than impressed with their offerings and upholding these very specific pizza standards. Where these places failed, Max and Leo’s prevailed.

Pie after pie and the Guys just couldn’t seem to get enough. BRAVO!!! (Standing ovation)…..”One more pie, one more pie” we yelled in anticipation of an encore pizza presentation. Tombstone even went a step further and ordered a pizza to-go so he could determine how their pizza held up while taking the long and grueling journey back to the abode with the conclusion that this pizza holds its own whether you decide to dine in or dine out.

Let’s talk shop:

  • The Margarita: Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese & Basil. The classic – never has it been so true… Max and Leo’s nails the classic Margarita! The crust was perfectly chard, with no chard taste – ingredients were well balanced, with no one star.  Basil was incorporated with the melted cheese, but no hint of blacken or bitterness from the heat of the oven.  A stellar first pie; that invited us into the wonders that is Max and Leo’s.
  • L’Enza: Tomato Sauce, Italian Sausage, Wild Mushroom & Mozzarella Cheese. This is a Slice Guys staple – Boboli’s signature order – we were all impressed by the freshness of the mushrooms and sausage – nothing fancy, just a well put together pizza. The guys all agreed that Stone Hearth (now just Hearth) in Needham, MA still offered one of the best sausage/mushroom pies that the slice guys have tried, but for our 2nd offering of the night – we were continuing to stay impressed, interested, and hungry for more.
  • Leonidas: White Olive Oil Pizza with Mortadella, Capocollo, Sopressata, Marinated Tomatoes, Pepperoncini, Pickled Red Onion & Provolone Cheese Topped with Mixed Greens & Red Wine Vinegar Drizzle. Where other pizzas fail with an overabundance of toppings, and establishments trying to push the envelope of Man vs. Food – kitchen sink meets pizza – Max and Leo’s Leonidas excels. There were just the right blend of flavors and subtleties to enhance the Guys experience.  The base layer of Mortadella which was cooked just enough to firm up, provided a salty and meaty balance to this not so salad, salad pizza.  With a depth of flavor and perfect crust – this pizza really makes a statement as a creation worth bragging about.
  • The Mikey: Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese & All Beef Pepperoni. This was the only takeout pizza but boy was it delicious. The slightly acidic, non-complex tomato sauce sat below a flavorful and mildly oily cheesey/beefy surface with an ever-so delectable and perfectly charred mantle. This pizza was orgasmic. The very thought of the box contents that sat a few feet away in his kitchen, haunted Tombstone’s thoughts as The Mikey beckoned from the kitchen…”I’m heeerrreee, come eat me”. Although, extremely full, Tombstone had no self-control and was overcome by the ghostly urge to stuff his fat face with reckless abandon. Simply delicious! This pizza was an 8 out of 8 on Tombstone’s personal Slice-O-Meter scale.

On a side note, hey Max and Leo, give your server a raise, she is outstanding, and might we add that she is an exceptional multi-tasker. Just so our audience gets an idea of what we are talking about, this professional lady managed every aspect of this establishment by her lonesome and without missing a single beat. She was on point during a bustling night and within a very chaotic and busy work environment. She took phone orders, served patrons, bussed tables, and bartended, all while maintaining an upbeat and very positive, and friendly demeanor. She was informative, courteous, thoughtful and prompt. Well done server lady; the Slice Guys really appreciated your excellent service.

Max and Leo’s gets our first ever perfect score. 8 out of 8 Slices!!!!!
