Roll: Boboli, Ellio & Tombstone

It was a dreary day my friends but nothing was going to stop the Slice Guys council members, Boboli, Ellio and Tombstone from getting over to Watertown for their official monthly pizza meeting of the minds, adjourning at Stella’s Pizzeria located at 605 Mount Auburn Street. Tombstone took the lead with this month’s selection and much to the dismay of the others, research was not the first thing on Tombstone’s agenda; he was hungry and extremely anxious for something saucy and cheesy which unfortunately left Ellio twiddling with his piePhone in anticipation for at least an hour since Stella’s doesn’t open until 1pm on Sunday afternoon (a tad inconvenient and strange if you ask these Slice Guys).

This fact left the three of them standing in the rain dumbfounded, what to do, what to do? Since they had an additional hour to kill, the Slice Guys decided to find a local watering hole to wet their whistle.  Luckily, the Mount Auburn Grille was conveniently situated about a block’s distance away. Thank God for this place, what a townie oasis! This is one of those local joints that you cannot resist its dusty, dreary, old boozy charm. After working up a hearty appetite from opening the 2000lb door, the bartender sternly exclaimed NO FOOD! Something told them that this place was not recognized for their culinary delights but Ellio can attest for it’s cheap beer and abundant KENO opportunities. Boboli felt right at home among “Old Grandpa’s Whiskey” and circa 1950s bottle of Dewar’s. Boboli had made at least two legitimate friends before we settled up the tab and headed over to Stella’s for lunch.

And… it’s PIZZA TIME!

The Pie:

Stellas is your typical take out joint; it has an order counter with minimal seating (three booths to be precise). The place is clean and the staff was gracious from the start, considering the door seemed to endlessly revolve with numerous patrons who were obviously chomping at the bit to get their hands on a tasty pie to brighten up such a dark and dreary Sunday afternoon. One lady was so impatient that she intercepted the Guy’s meat lovers pie, how dare she! Lucky, the Guy’s were in good spirits and they are never in a rush on such special occasions such as these. One redeeming quality about Stella’s drab, mom & pop decor was the fact that they had a decent flat screen HDTV to watch the 1 o’clock football game. Once again, the friendly Stella’s staff were more than accommodating to The Slice Guys request to watch the Raven’s versus Bengals match-up.

So, enough about HDTV, rude ladies and interior design, lets get down to the real nitty-gritty…THE PIE. The pizza came out piping hot and at first glance their pie was picture perfect. The sauce was infused with oregano and basil which lead to a mildly over-sweetened flavor which was somewhat disappointing for a couple of the Slice Guys, but the cheese was good and melty with mozzarella that bubbled over like a pool of hot magma. Aside from the quality mozzarella and doctored sauce, the crust was standard. It maintained a welcomed chew and a nice crispy consistency that added an appropriate crunch. Onto pie #2.

Cheese :)

Cheese 🙂

As you all know, it is Slice Guy custom to order an additional pizza.  Article 1, section 7 of the Slice Guy Constitution states that the Slice Guys must ALWAYS order a house special in addition to one large cheese pizza when gathering out to an official Slice Guy pizza meeting. In Stella’s case, their special pizza was appropriately entitled “The Meat Lovers”. This pizza featured everything under the sun that originated from Bessie and Wilbur.  This pie came out molten hot which almost placed two of the Slice Guys onto IR due to third degree burns to the lower lip. Anything with that much porky/beefy goodness is an automatic score by Slice Guys standards.

In conclusion, any neighborhood would be lucky to have a joint like Stella’s as their go to pizza place. The Slice Guys would definitely refer any pizza enthusiast to this establishment because all-in-all, Stella’s Pizzeria makes one fine pie.
